US layoffs by industry — the WARN Act filings, cut by sector

When a large US employer runs a mass layoff or closes a site, the WARN Act makes them file a notice with the state. The states publish those notices; none of them publishes an industry field. So “show me healthcare layoffs” is a question the source data cannot answer, and it is the question almost everyone actually has.

This is our answer to it. Of the 61,428 notices on record, the 61,232 that carry a usable date go through a published rule table on the employer name, and 32,168 come out tagged to one of 19 sectors — with the matching pattern recorded on every single row, so you can check it or re-cut it yourself. The cuts are not a partition: manufacturing deliberately contains automotive and food-and-beverage plants as well, because a plant-closing buyer wants all three in one file. Each page states its own boundary. Adding the columns will therefore over-count; the un-overlapped per-sector totals are in sector_by_year.csv.

How the industry is decided: no state WARN portal publishes an industry field, so there is no NAICS column to filter on. The sector here is assigned from the resolved employer name by a published rule table (19 sectors, 3,152 patterns, first match wins), and every row carries the pattern that fired in its sector_rule column so you can audit or re-cut it. The archive holds 61,428 notices; 61,232 of them carry a usable date and are in the sector file (196 have no date in either column), 32,168 come out with a sector, and 29,064 stay unclassified — and are still counted in every total shown anywhere on this site. Manual audit 2026-09-12: 4 of 60 sampled rows were assigned to the wrong sector. Rebuilt 2026-09-24.
